Mercedes Benz recently announced plans to develop its own luxury brand of navigation based on in-car geospatial data and technology from the renowned Google Maps platform. Google and Mercedes will also work together to integrate Google Cloud’s artificial intelligence technology into the Mercedes Benz driving experience.
Google Maps and Mercedes
Mercedes plans to integrate certain features that Google Maps is able to offer utilizing its highly sophisticated geo-spatial data. This includes real-time traffic information, rerouting, ETAs, local business information, and more. Google’s data will also be used to enhance certain safety systems, such as automatic deceleration at intersections and sharp curves.
Mercedes has long been at the forefront of luxury and technology. The brand hopes that Google’s familiarity and ease-of-use will add to Mercedes’ luxury driving experience. Of the new partnership, Mercedes CEO Ola Kallenius said, “Google has been a leader in maps and navigation for many years. With our strategic partnership, we are excited to create unique services to elevate the level of convenience for our customers.”
Streaming Video in Mercedes Benz
In addition to Google Maps and AI technology, Mercedes also plans to add the YouTube app to the infotainment system. Utilizing their partnership with Zync, and in-car streaming service, passengers can access 30 different platforms, now including YouTube. Streaming is available when the vehicle is parked and where local regulations permit video streaming when the car is in motion. Front-seat in-motion streaming will also be available for level 3 automated vehicles.
When Will Google Maps Be Available in Mercedes?
The first Google Maps technology will exist in the form of Place Details and will be available immediately in all of the latest generation MBUX systems. Place Details will give drivers access to information about over 200 million businesses, including hours of operation, reviews, address, and photos.
