Mercedes benz steering wheel to signify level 3 autonomous driving

Mercedes Benz has been approved by the government to operate the first level 3 autonomous driving system in the United States. The new level of Drive Pilot is currently certified in the state of Nevada. It is similar to level 2, but with a few more liberties for drivers. Read our article to learn more.

What Are the Autonomous Driving Levels?

There are six levels of autonomous driving assigned to vehicles, from zero autonomous capabilities to fully hands off driving. Level 4 vehicles are expected to make an appearance in the near future, while levels above that are a bit farther off. Here are the criteria for each level:

Level 0: no automated driving abilities. This means the driver controls all functions, including acceleration, steering, braking, etc.

Level 1: only one type of automated system, such as cruise control.

Level 2: includes advanced driver assistance systems (ADAS), such as brake assist, park assist, steering assist, cruise control, etc. The driver can take over controls at any point and must monitor all systems.

Level 3: enhanced environmental detection capabilities, meaning the car can mostly drive itself. However, human monitoring and override are still required.

Level 4: human override is optional. The vehicle uses geofencing and other technology to perform most functions independently. Minimal driver attention is still needed.

Level 5: the vehicle performs all driving tasks with no need for driver intervention.

What Does Mercedes Level 3 Driver Pilot Do?

Mercedes level 3 autonomous driving system utilizes the brand’s sophisticated camera systems to monitor drivers as the vehicle operates independently. Drivers are still expected to be in the driver’s seat, mostly paying attention to the road. The driver’s face must be fully visible to the camera, for example, or the system will disengage.

Like level 2 Driver Pilot, level 3 will include active brake assist, lane assist, acceleration, cruise control, and other ADAS. Unlike level 2 autonomous driving, however, level 3 allows the driver to engage in a little screen time whilst the vehicle is on autopilot. For example, he or she can play a game on the infotainment system or make eye contact with a passenger for conversation.

Activities that might obstruct the driver’s face, however, won’t be achievable. Taking a selfie, for example, or trying to film vertical content will cause the Level 3 system to shut down, requiring human intervention to keep the vehicle in operation.

Where Can You Drive Level 3 Autonomous Mercedes?

At the moment, Mercedes’ Level 3 Driver Pilot is only available in the state of Nevada and only permitted at speeds of 40 mph or less on “suitable freeway sections where there is high traffic density.” This would indicate that Level 3 driving will only be available in stop-and-go conditions.

The limited conditions under which Level 3 operates are likely due to safety concerns. There has been some worry that drivers who remain disengaged for longer periods of time may execute poor judgment when a human override becomes necessary. For example, a driver may brake too suddenly or be too slow to respond if they haven’t been paying attention.

In the meantime, Mercedes and other luxury brands are continuing research and development on level 4 technology, which will require even less driver interaction and be able to operate under more varied circumstances.
