Trevor Noah Drives 2022 Mercedes EQS 580 4Matic+ on “Jay Leno’s Garage”

On November 8, 2021, Jay Leno hosted Trevor Noah on an episode of his series, “Jay Leno’s Garage.” Now in its sixth season, the show features interviews with fellow celebrities and reviews on new, classic, and restored cars. In this episode, the two test drive the 2022 EQS

Jay Leno’s Car Collection

Leno himself has over 300 cars and motorbikes in his personal collection, which is valued at around $52 million. While Leno has stated that his favorite company is McClaren, his most beloved car is a 1972 Mercedes-Benz Kompressor.

On the latest episode of “Jay Leno’s Garage” Leno and Noah test drive the latest electric vehicle from Europe: the Mercedes-Benz EQS 580 4Matic+. The all-electric vehicle boasts 516 horsepower and 613 lb-ft of torque, launching the vehicle from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. Luxury styling inside and out is matched by the latest in Mercedes’ technology.

Noah is, himself, a car enthusiast and is an especial fan of electric vehicles. He points out that he spent much of his youth fixing cars and has no desire to work with engines or their parts again. He tells a somewhat incredulous Leno, “I don’t miss any part of an engine. I don’t miss spark plugs, I don’t miss carburetors, I don’t miss anything.”

Leno responds by saying he prefers the mechanics of standard engines which are, in his opinion, easier to pinpoint for repairs. He says, “with electricity, I don’t know why it’s not getting there.”

That is precisely the reason Noah likes electric cars. He loves the “no-noise” and “instant torque.” He elaborates by saying he prefers not to “know how his car is feeling or thinking.” No groaning or clunking when climbing a hill, no revving of the engine. “Give me a car that has a top speed of a hundred miles an hour, but give me nonstop torque.”

A still skeptical Leno quips, “Well a little more than a hundred…”

Driving the EQS 580 4Matic+

At last, the two approach the starring vehicles: twin midnight blue EQS 580s outfitted with the most luxurious interior options and pre-programmed MBUX profiles. “Oh look at that, it knows my name!” Noah says.

The two speed along the highway where Leno admits that the car “accelerates nicely.” Cut to Noah, who is having so much fun he is laughing out loud. The two communicate seamlessly over bluetooth while they discuss Noah’s foundation, which gives youth in South Africa the tools they need to succeed in schools.

It has to be noted that the interior of the cars is remarkably quiet, without the usual outside traffic sounds or mechanical noises to compete with the interview that is taking place. Noah looks particularly relaxed, settled into the comfy leather seat and driving one-handed. The car is the pinnacle of Mercedes luxury and tech and, in the end, even Leno has to admit, “I could get used to this.”
