What Does MBUX Mean on a Mercedes?

We have mentioned the MBUX system in previous blog posts as part of the innovative technology features that come standard with Mercedes-Benz luxury cars. But the system is fascinating in its own right, utilizing complex AI technology to help your vehicle evolve with you.

In this article, we will take an in-depth look at the Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) and explore some of its best features and capabilities.

What Is the MBUX System?

Very basically, the MBUX is an advanced media and navigation system. It is an upgrade to Mercedes’ previous Infotainment system. It premiered at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas in January 2018 and soon after entered production in new Mercedes-Benz A-Class vehicles.

How Does the MBUX Work?

The MBUX utilizes artificial intelligence to adapt to your driving style, route preferences, comfort levels, radio stations, and more. It is designed to be exceptionally intuitive, so hard voice commands are not necessary.

To start the process, simply say, “Hey, Mercedes.” From there, you can say virtually anything related to route, temperature, display, and music and the car will accommodate you. For example, if you say, “Hey, Mercedes, I need a coffee,” the MBUX will program the navigation to the nearest coffee shop.

If voice commands are not your style, the MBUX also works via touch screen or touch pad and can even interpret natural gestures.

As a learning technology, your MBUX will begin to predict your needs, automatically adjusting temperature, seating, and music to suit your individual style. It will learn your work route and suggest alternatives if your usual commute is jammed. It will also suggest new radio stations based on the music you typically listen to.

Best Features of the MBUX

  1. Touch Control Options

The MBUX was designed around a touch interface, so the system incorporates multiple touch controls. You can operate the system from the touch screen, where your most frequently used functions are intuitively displayed no more than a few swipes away.

You can also use a touchpad on the center console that understands swipe, pinch, and tapping functions all with haptic response. Hard keys at the top let you go back a screen, skip to the next song, or go to the Homescreen. The touchpad even interprets handwriting, so you can input addresses and phone numbers this way if you prefer.

Finally, you can control the system entirely from the touch control buttons integrated into the steering wheel. Simply swipe up, down, left, or right on the small touch pad and press the pad to select. Like the touchpad, you can use the hard buttons to navigate back one screen, go to the Homescreen, or control the music. Press the voice command button to initiate voice recognition, or press the phone button to make or end a call.

  1. User Profiles

The MBUX allows up to 7 profiles to be programmed from the home screen. Choose your preferred seating and side mirror adjustments, ambient lighting, radio stations, and work routes; pair up to two devices via bluetooth. When you start the car, select your profile and the vehicle will adjust to your pre-programmed settings.

  1. Enhanced Voice Recognition

Another impressive feature of the MBUX is its enhanced voice recognition system. There is no need to memorize specific commands to accomplish a task. MBUX incorporates a natural language understanding, which means you can talk to it the same way you would a friend.

  1. Artificial Intelligence
Yes, even the Maybach comes with the MBUX system

The MBUX system utilizes artificial intelligence to learn your specific driving habits and make helpful suggestions based on these patterns. The system will create shortcuts for your favorite radio stations, suggest alternate routes to work, and change the display to make it easier for you to activate the functions you use most. If you do not wish to use this function, you can simply disable it.
