The 2021 S 580 – Amazing

While the term “luxury car” is largely subjective, most everyone agrees that a luxury car meets certain standards of comfort, style, performance, and technology. Mercedes-Benz repeatedly exceeds these standards, and the new S Class cars are a prime example of this.

The Mercedes-Benz 2021 S 580 4Matic is the ultimate in mid-size luxury vehicles and is consistently ranked as one of the top luxury cars of the year.

What Makes the 2021 S 580 4Matic a Great Luxury Car?

Smoother Ride

The 2021 S-Class vehicles, including the S 580, will include the E-Active Body Control System. Previously only available in the GLE and GLS SUVs, the system employs multiple tactics to ensure the smoothest ride possible.

A camera system creates a 3D digital view of the road and terrain. Then it sends the information to the suspension. This allows the suspension to tackle upcoming potholes, bumps, or other variations in the road. When lighting is optimal, the system can detect height variances as little as 2mm!

The E-Active Body Control System also incorporates the Curve system, which reduces discomfort felt during turning. As the vehicle rounds a corner, the system leans the body into the turn, thereby reducing the impact of centrifugal force felt by passengers in the car.

Enhanced Safety

Aside from providing greater comfort, the suspension control is crucial to the Pre-Safe+ feature. When activated the side-mounted radar sensors will detect an imminent side impact. The suspension instantly raises the body upwards by up to three inches. This reduces the loads on the door structures, allowing more of the crash’s force to be absorbed by the stronger door sills. The occupant’s seat bolsters will even attempt to shove you over away from the side of the impact for greater protection.

Next we have the Distronic driver-assist feature that maintains following distance. It now has a predictive speed limit setting so it knows when the speed limit is about to change. This allows the vehicle to slow down accordingly.

Speaking of brakes, its automated emergency braking system for stationary objects now works at speeds up to 80 mph. Previously it only worked at up to 35 mph. The active stopping feature also has an optional lane-changing function. The S 580 will move into an adjacent lane to avoid a crash if no other vehicles are detected there, and it works at speeds up to 50 mph.

For even more safety we are also employing the camera in the digital dash cluster to determine if a driver’s eyelids are drooping to detect fatigue. The camera adds an additional dimension of safety.

Finally, we’ve all done it at least once: accidentally run a stop sign or traffic light. The results can be disastrous. The S 580 has a warning system that will activate if you are to slow in stopping for an approaching stop sign or red traffic light.

Optional rear-axle steering

Moving away from safety for a quick minute, the S 580 has also integrated its first rear-axle steering system. There are two different systems available optionally. The first is able to provide a rear steering angle of 4.5 degrees. The other can go up to 10 degrees.

Option one is for customers who are more focused on high-speed stability. Option 2 is designed to appeal to those in city environments. Just like most rear-wheel steering systems, there are a couple big benefits here. When traveling at speeds greater than 35 mph, the rear wheels will turn in in unison with the front wheels. At low speeds, the rear wheels turn the opposite direction to make for a smaller turning radius. This gives the S 580 the capability of a turning radius (less than 36 feet) identical to that of the tiny A-Class. That’s hugely impressive and should make it far more livable in small downtown areas and in parking maneuvers.

City-dwelling S 580 owners will also enjoy a smattering of other new or improved features. We have improved both our Active Parking Assist and our 360-degree camera tech. The car can now recognize more spots to park itself, even going as far as being able to park using the lines on the ground without any cars around. There’s also a new three-dimensional image that can be pulled up in the car’s 360-degree camera mode. It stitches together camera feeds from all around the car to show you a model of your vehicle and the environment around it. The image can be interacted with via touch on screen, letting you move all the way around the vehicle to see your surroundings in context with the vehicle.

Even Greater Comfort

S 580 vehicles come standard with Nappa leather seats that feature a multi-contour massage function. There is more legroom for both driver and passenger and plenty of storage for drinks, purses, and other odds and ends.

One truly impressive option for the S 580 cars is the all-new Augmented Reality Head’s Up Display, (AR-HUD). This innovative system is a new benchmark for guided driving. Among other things, the AR-HUD system:

  • gives readouts about driving speed and cardinal direction
  • projects glowing lights under the car in front of you to help maintain a safe distance
  • outlines the edges of corners in red
  • uses augmented reality navigation to guide you through intersections and roundabouts
  • incorporates active lane assist
  • projects a location balloon when your destination is coming up
