These two Mercedes-Benz models are the SUV counterparts to the E and S class sedans. Both feature a sleek design and a roomy cabin with driver and passenger comfort in mind. There are a few key differences between the GLE and GLS models, with size and power being the main advantages to the GLS.

Looking for a great GLE or GLS? Mercedes of Littleton has you covered!

Size, Strength, and Cargo Space

Overall, the Mercedes GLS SUV is larger than the GLE. Current and older models of the GLS can seat up to seven passengers. The 2021 and 2022 model of the GLE are the only ones that have comparable seating options-older models max out at five passengers.

The GLS is also longer than the GLE. The 2022 version is 205” in length, leaving ample leg room for the passengers in the third row. By comparison, the 2022 GLE SUV is 194.3” long.

Even with seven passengers, the Mercedes GLS has up to 17.3 ft3 of cargo space and can tow up to 7700 lbs. The GLE tows 500 lbs less, but offers nearly double the cargo space at 33.3 ft3.

Summary: the GLS is larger and has more standard passenger and towing capacity. But it has half the trunk space of the GLE.

Engine Design and Horsepower

The Mercedes GLS is more powerful than the GLE. The entry level 450 features a turbo inline 6 engine that boasts 362 horsepower and 360 lb-ft of torque; the 580 incorporates a biturbo V8 with an impressive 483 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque.

By contrast, the 2022 GLE 350 4Matic’s 2.0L inline 4-turbo engine gets 255 hp and 273 lb-ft of torque. However, you can upgrade to the 450 or 580 models for horsepower and handling that compares to the GLS.

Summary: the entry-level GLS model is more powerful than the entry-level GLE. However, you can upgrade to the GLS 450 or 580 for comparable power and torque.

Safety and Fuel Economy

Both vehicles offer high-tech Mercedes-Benz safety features like brake assist, lane assist, ambient lighting, and blind-spot assist.

The 2022 GLE 350 gets an average of 22 mpg (city and highway combined), while the 2022 GLS 450 gets 21 mpg combined.

Summary: safety options and fuel economy are comparable between the entry-level GLS and GLE vehicles.

Keep in mind, however, that seven seats come standard with the GLS. You will have to select third row seating as an option when you purchase the GLE, and this will raise the final price.

Key Points to remember about the GLE and GLS

When it really comes down to it, choosing between the Mercedes-Benz GLE or GLS depends on your sizing and/or cargo requirements. Both classes have models with comparable horsepower, torque, and fuel economy. The main difference lies in their overall size and cargo capacity.

If you require more passenger room, you might want to opt for the 2022 GLS 450, which comes standard with 7 seats. While the 2022 GLE 350 does have an option for a fold-down third row, it costs extra and will not be as roomy as the GLS.

If you need more cargo space, you might prefer the GLE. Less passengers allow for nearly double the cargo space of the entry-level GLS.
