Mercedes EQS 580 4Matic in Red

When it comes to luxury vehicles, brands like Mercedes Benz and Porsche are often at the top of our minds. This is for good reason: both brands have earned a place as leaders in automotive power, technology, comfort, and style. Let’s have a little fun and compare the two brand’s highest end all-electric vehicles: 2023 Mercedes EQS 580 4MATIC Sedan vs 2023 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo.

EQS Class Sedan vs Taycan GTS Power and Specs

Let’s start with some simple numbers: battery capacity, horsepower, torque, acceleration, range and MPGe. The 2023 Mercedes EQS 580 4matic model sedan has a 108.4 kWh battery capacity, 516 hp, and 631 lb-ft of torque. The vehicle accelerates from 0-60 in 4.1 seconds, has a max range of 340 miles, and gets around 97 MPGe.

The 2023 Porsche Taycan GTS Sport Turismo has a smaller battery capacity at 93.4 kWh; it gets up to 590 hp with launch control, and a max torque of 626 lb-ft. Range is much less than the EQS Sedan, at around 233 miles on a full charge, but the Taycan accelerates to 60 miles per hour in a zippy 3.5 seconds. Fuel economy is an estimated 80 MPGe (combined highway and city).

So far, Mercedes’ electric sedan wins for battery capacity, torque, range, and MPGe, and Porsche wins for acceleration and hp.

Mercedes EQS 580 vs Porsche Taycan Standard Technology

Now, let’s take a look at the standard tech and luxury features of the Mercedes EQS 580 versus the Porsche Taycan GTS. Both feature a large central multimedia display, called the Porsche Control Management (PCM) in the Taycan and the MBUX in Mercedes. At 12.8 inches, the MBUX screen is nearly two inches larger than the PCM. Porsche, however, wins out with a 16.8 inch curved instrument cluster versus Mercedes’ 12.3 inches.

Porsche and Mercedes offer comparable safety systems in their electric vehicles, with versions of lane assist, brake assist, park assist, and more. Both also have a learning software with voice controls that allows users to complete simple tasks, like changing the music station or internal temperature. Ambient lighting, climate control, memory seats, and wireless charging come standard in both vehicles.

Comfort is, likewise, comparable between the two vehicles. Comfy, ergonomic seats, classy trim, and unique design elements abound in both vehicles. When it comes to space, however, Mercedes once again wins out, with up to 63 cubic feet of cargo room (Porsche maxes out at 42.8 cubic feet).

Charging Convenience for Taycan vs Mercedes EQS

This is where Porsche may have a slight edge over Mercedes. That larger battery in the EQS takes longer to charge (about 12 hours with a level two wall charger). Porsche offers a combination charging system that can fully charge the Taycan in around 5 hours. Again, though, the range on a full battery is more than 100 miles less than the Mercedes, so you have to decide which better suits your needs: greater range or faster home charging. J

My Porsche and Mercedes me Charge are convenient mobile apps that allow drivers of both vehicles to locate charging stations, monitor battery levels, pay for their charge, and more.

Cost Comparison of Porsche Taycan GTS and Mercedes EQS 580

MSRP for the Porsche Taycan Sport Turismo is $136,000; the Mercedes EQS 580 4MATIC starts at a slightly lower $125,950.
