Best Features of the 2022 MB GLS SUV

In the summer of 2021, Mercedes-Benz confirmed that it would be indefinitely halting production on vehicles utilizing a V8 engine. An official statement from Mercedes largely cited supply chain issues, though there is some speculation that the change may be due to environmental regulations as well.

Whatever the reason, the change has impacted several models of Mercedes, including the 2022 GLS. This year, there will be only one model available: the GLS 450.

Fortunately, the GLS 450 stands on its own as a beautiful, spacious, high-performing vehicle. If you had to choose just one SUV, this one would do just fine. Sleek-yet-understated, roomy but not awkward, the new model adapts just as well to camping as it does to road trips.

New features come standard for comfort, safety, and maneuverability, improving upon the model’s already generous amenities.

GLS Exterior Features

The GLS 450 has a long wheelbase (123.4”) and comes standard with 20” wheels. An AMG package increases wheel size to a cushy 23” and adds gloss and a sleek black trim. While the car is large, it manages to avoid a bulky appearance with carefully sculpted lines and compact styling.

GLS 450 Engine Specs

The 2022 GLS 450 is powered by a 3.0 liter inline 6 turbo engine with “mild hybrid drive.”

The twin scroll engine puts out 362 horsepower and 369 ft-lb of torque for an incredibly smooth ride and superior responsiveness.

The GLS 450 SUV accelerates from 0 to 60 mph in 5.9 seconds and gets an average highway fuel economy of 24 mph (18 in the city). You can choose from rear-wheel drive or the 4Matic all-wheel drive system.

What Does Mild Hybrid Drive Mean on a GLS?

Mild hybrid means the engine is electrified with an Integrated Start Generator. The generator supplies up to 21 hp and increases efficiency by allowing the car to recapture energy during deceleration.

Paired with a 48-volt lithium battery, the mild hybrid system also powers formerly belt-driven parts, like the air-conditioner compressor and the water pump. The car is lighter as a result, electric-assisted torque and power only enhance the car’s incredible handling.

Interior Features of the 2022 Mercedes GLS 450

The new GLS 450 is roomy. Up to seven people can sit comfortably, with plush seating, cupholders, USB ports, climate control, and sound system access in every row. Luxury upgrade options include four ventilated heated and massaging seats for the first and second row.

If you only need room for six passengers, a six-seat option is available at no extra cost with 2nd row captain’s chairs and walk-through access to the back row.

The GLS naturally incorporates all the latest Mercedes tech, including the artificially intelligent MBUX learning system, which responds to your voice commands and accommodates multiple driving profiles. The system automatically adjusts over time as it learns your driving habits and preferences.

You can further customize your drive by selecting from 64 colors of ambient lighting. Ionizer-purified air can be infused with essential oils for an incredible, spa-like driving experience.

Additional new tech lets you spot a traffic jam ahead of time, change lanes at the push of a turn signal button, and even protect your ears in the event of a crash.
