In line with its goal to be all or mostly electric by 2030, Mercedes continues to unveil impressive new members in its expanding fleet of electric vehicles. The EQE sedan is the latest to be released in the EQ lineup. Set to hit dealerships in Fall/Winter 2022, the car will serve as a slightly smaller alternative to the original EQS. Further appealing to consumers will be the EQE’s under $100,000 ticket price, competing well with the brand’s flagship electric sedan.

A Mid-size Luxury Sedan in an EV

The 2023 Mercedes EQE will launch with the 350+ model. Mercedes-Benz USA touts the new model EQE as “A mid-size sedan with E-Class lineage and electric power.” It is being marketed as a direct competitor to the Tesla Model S, in size, performance, and price.

Seasoned E-class drivers won’t miss much by converting to electric: the EQE shares the same approach to design, performance, and technology as its combustion-engine counterpart, with all the clear benefits of an electric vehicle. Bridging the gap between driving enthusiasts and luxury car aficionados is something that Mercedes does well, and the EQE keeps in mind the priorities of both kinds of drivers while focusing on sustainability and efficiency. Early test drives promise a smooth, exceptionally quiet drive that makes up for road feel with unparalleled precision.

Performance

Efficiency might just be the core value of the EQE. The 2023 Mercedes EQE 350+ model promises a long range: the rear-drive 350+ has thinner 19-inch tires and a 90.6-kWh battery that have contributed to the car having tested as good for 660 kilometers in Europe, expected to translate to approximately 350 EPA miles. That is a staggering range for an EV, with plenty of wiggle room for back-country road trips.

Charging woes will be virtually nonexistent; with the maximum charging rate of 170 kW, owners will be able to recharge up to 155 WLTP-standard miles in only 15 minutes. Normal charging time from 10-100% is approximately 9.5 hours using a 240V wall box, and a lightning-fast 30 minutes from 10-100% using a 170kW DC fast charging station.

The 350+ has the high efficiency, compact synchronous motor found in all Mercedes-EQ vehicles. In the 350+ sedan it produces  288-hp and 391-lb-ft of torque, resulting in the high-torque-at low-speeds precision punch that Mercedes EV drivers have come to expect. The rear-wheel drive model reaches 60 mph in a respectable 5.6 seconds.(Specs are for RWD; an AWD version will also be available).

Exterior

While it has been advertised as a little sibling to the EQS, the EQE is closer in dimensions to the CLS, and is comparable in size to the Tesla Model S. Compared to the EQS, the EQE is about 11 inches shorter and six inches narrower, and has a wheelbase that’s 3.5 inches shorter than its precursor.

Trim options and paint colors are yet to be released, but you can bet on a number of sleep options to upgrade and customize your EQE 350+.

Interior

Like its predecessors, the EQE 350+ interior is classic Mercedes. While its competitors favor minimalist, even cheeky, design elements, Mercedes honors its heritage with the timeless luxury finishes that keep drivers coming back.

The cabin is reasonably spacious, thanks to a higher One-Bow roof. It also has higher seating positions than the EQS, a feature it borrows from the C-class. The trunk has been redesigned without the overhead hinges found in the EQS, allowing for more rear headroom. Amid the usual chrome, aluminum, and leather details, drivers will breathe clean filtered air delivered by a 600-cubic-inch HEPA filter. In a post-COVID, climate-anxious environment, this is a much-lauded comfort feature.

Tech

The EQE will include automatic electric-powered doors, biometric identification including fingerprint sensor and facial recognition that will initiate different driver profiles, a dazzling head-up display, massage seats, ambient lighting in 64 colors, and the aforementioned HEPA air filtration system. The Burmester sound system makes a reappearance, but with a new feature that can enable personalized driving “soundscapes.” The soundscapes come in three appealing-sounding options: Silver Waves, Roaring Pulse, and Vivid Flux.

Trim levels have not been outlined yet, but  based on previous iterations one can expect that higher trim levels will have the ubiquitous MBUX Hysperscreen as an option. Early test drives report that, although the MBUX is ever-impressive, the huge head-up display renders it a potentially unnecessary addition. However, a new safety feature of the Hyperscreen monitors the driver’s gaze and will either pause or dim the content if the driver becomes distracted.
