Mercedes Benz logo against a blue sky

The logo of Mercedes Benz is almost as ubiquitous as the name itself: a simple yet elegant 3-pointed star that perfectly embodies the brand’s dedication to style and technology. But what is the specific meaning behind the Mercedes Benz logo? Read our article to learn more about the history of the Mercedes logo and its symbolism.

Why Mercedes Benz Has a Three Star Logo

As a company, Mercedes Benz can be traced back to two German engineers: Gottlieb Daimler and Karl Benz. Daimler had founded his own company, Daimler-Motoren Gesellschaft (DMG) in 1890, while Benz had established Benz & Cie. in 1883. It was not until 1900 that the first “Mercedes” was made: a race car named after the daughter of Emil Jellinek, a racing enthusiast and early supporter of the Daimler vehicles.

DMG and Benz & Cie. eventually merged into Daimler-Benz Auto Group (AG) in 1926. Gottlieb Daimler had died well before, in 1900; however, his sons, Adolf and Paul, represented his interests in the merger and were the ones to suggest a three pointed star as the symbol of the new company.

The brothers remembered a postcard their father had once sent them on which he had marked the location of his hometown with a tiny, blue 3-pointed star. Gottlieb had also inscribed a message alongside the image, saying he hoped it would represent the future success of their business.

The three pointed star was officially adopted by Daimler-Benz in 1909. The circle was added later as a nod to the original Benz & Cie. logo, which was surrounded by curved laurel leaves.

What Do the Three Points Mean on the Mercedes Benz Logo?

Individually, the three points on the Mercedes Benz star logo are meant to represent land, sky, and sea: the three domains that Daimler and Benz originally hoped to dominate with their superior engines. As a whole, the three-pointed star enclosed within the circle is meant to represent Mercedes Benz’ dedication to universal motorization. With this goal in mind, we may one day see all types of vehicles equipped with Mercedes engines, regardless of terrain.

We can safely say the brand is well on its way to accomplishing its goal in land vehicles. In the past, Mercedes has dabbled in marine and jet engines, so it will be interesting to see if any skyborn or seafaring vehicles bearing the famous star logo emerge in the near future.
