Mercedes Benz offers three options in its Sprinter van lineup: the Cargo, the Crew, and the Passenger.

The Sprinter Cargo Van has the least seating and the most cargo space. It features a single row of seats (for two passengers) and the rest of the space is dedicated to cargo storage. Because of this ample space, the Cargo van is a popular choice in van conversions and customizations; you may also recognize it as the blue van that brings your latest Amazon.com purchases to your door.

By contrast, the Sprinter Passenger Van has the most seating and the least cargo space. It can seat up to 12 people and hold up to 190.3 cubic feet of cargo. It is highly desirable as a large family vehicle or in shuttle services. The Mercedes Sprinter Crew Van might be seen as a blend between the Cargo and Passenger options. It can seat up to 5 people and has room for between 144-177 cubic feet of cargo. This is also a great choice for average-sized families while traveling long distances or for small businesses requiring transport of both supplies and workers.

All Sprinter vans are equipped with active brake assist, blind spot assist mirrors, a 360 degree camera, and high performance LED lights. Sprinter vans also have a 22 gallon tank, a 4 cylinder engine, and come in 4×2 or 4×4 options.

Metris Van Sizes and Capabilities

Mercedes has two options for its Metris van series: Cargo and Passenger. Both are smaller than the Sprinter, but include the same safety features and towing capacity.

Metris vans feature a slightly smaller fuel tank (18.5 gallons), a 7-speed automatic transmission*, and rear-wheel drive.

*This is for older versions. The 2021 Metris models will feature a 9 speed automatic transmission.

How To Choose the Right Van for Your Business

In the end, the right van for you will depend on your unique needs as a business. Your requirements for a van may be very different even from your direct competitors’. When selecting a van for your business, you will need to consider several factors:

Where Will I Be Driving?

Different terrains are suited to different types of vans. If you are driving in predominantly urban environments, you may consider a smaller van with easier maneuverability, like the Metris Cargo or Metris Passenger Van.

What/Who Will I Be Transporting?

What and how much will you be carrying in your van? You will need to consider your average payload weight and cargo volume and choose a van that can accommodate those numbers. For example, if you have a higher volume or greater weight to transport, you might choose the Sprinter Cargo.

You also need to consider if you will be regularly transporting passengers, and how many. If your sole purpose is to shuttle passengers, you will want a van with ample seating, like the Sprinter or Metris Passenger Van. On the other hand, if you only need a few extra seats, consider the Sprinter Crew.

How Tall Do You Need Your Van to Be?

If you need to be able to stand up inside your vehicle, you will want to be sure you opt for a high-ceiling version of the Metris or Sprinter. However, you will also want to be aware of any height restrictions in your service areas, such as those in parking garages.
