Different Types of Air Conditioning for Sprinter Van Conversions

Air conditioning is often overlooked when undertaking a van conversion project. But a good A/C unit is essential in maintaining comfort and safety during the hottest months. Fortunately, there are plenty of options to choose from depending on your personal needs and budget.

Taking your Mercedes Sprinter Camping, the best way to stay cool is your Air Conditioning unit.

Compressor Camper Van Air Conditioners

Compressor A/C units are a popular rooftop choice for Sprinter Van conversions. They work by sucking in hot air and cooling it with a refrigerant. The main appeal of these units is that they work quickly. Also, since it is on the roof, it will not take up any additional space inside the van or obstruct window views.

If you opt for a compressor unit, you will need to keep a few things in mind. First, consider the weight. These units are often heavier than other air conditioners and you will want to be sure that your van roof can withstand the added pounds.

Second, compressor units use a lot of power. If you have a backup generator or will be in an area where you can plug in to an AC shore power grid, compressors can be a great option. However,  if you’re planning to go off-grid, you might want to consider another option that does not use as much power. Solar panels and your battery pack will not be able to sustain the compressor for great lengths of time.

Pros: works quickly, does not take up window or interior space

Cons: added weight, high power usage

Evaporative Cooling Air Conditioners

You may also know this type of cooling system by the name “swamp cooler.” This simple system works by cooling the surrounding air through the evaporation of water.

In a pinch, you can create a rudimentary evaporative cooling system by simply hanging a wet towel or sheet in front of a box fan. However, there are more sophisticated evaporative coolers available, and these are quite popular for being relatively inexpensive and power-saving. Swamp coolers use up to 75% less electricity than alternating current air conditioners.

Additionally, swamp coolers allow you to keep windows and doors open while they are operating. They do not emit any ozone-damaging refrigerants, and so are a more environmentally friendly option

The main thing you will want to consider when using an evaporative cooling system is where you will be traveling. Since swamp coolers work by effectively putting moisture into the air, they are not recommended for extremely humid environments. Using evaporative cooling in high humidity increases the risk of mold and mildew in your campervan, which can be a health hazard and cause serious damage to your vehicle.

Furthermore, you will want to plan for increased water usage when running your swamp cooler.

Pros: less power usage, more eco-friendly, can open windows and doors

Cons: increased water usage, potential for mold and mildew

Window Air Conditioners for Sprinter Vans

Window air conditioners can be a great option for campervans, especially if you are on a budget. They are relatively inexpensive and use much less power than rooftop or portable versions.

However, window a/c units are designed for traditional windows found in residences. This means you may need to design your van ahead of time to accommodate the unit. Your windows will require a sturdy frame to support the unit as well as plenty of insulation to keep it from rattling when the van is in motion.

Another important thing to consider is whether you will be okay with having one of your windows blocked off. For many, a great part of van living is immersion in nature. Having your view obstructed in any way may be a dealbreaker.

Pros: inexpensive, uses less power

Cons: complicated to install, obstructs views, not as efficient

Portable Air Conditioners for DIY Van Conversions

Portable air conditioners are comparable to rooftop versions for how quickly and efficiently they cool down your van. Like rooftop versions, they are also some of the more expensive options. They do use less power than rooftop versions, which can be an attractive quality.

Portable air conditioners, like window air conditioners, are not designed specifically for van interiors. You will similarly need to design your van to accommodate them. For example, you may need to cut a hole to allow the hose to release hot air. You will also need to insulate the hose to keep it from making your van too warm as it heats up.

Another thing to keep in mind: these portable units are effective but they also take up precious space inside your van. You will need to decide if it is worth it for your style of van living.

Pros: uses less power than rooftop air conditioners, works quickly

Cons: more expensive than other versions, more complicated to install, takes up space

Ultimately, the type of air conditioning you choose for your Sprinter Van conversion is up to you. If you are looking for an economical and environmentally-friendly option (and you won’t be traveling in high-humidity), a swamp cooler is a great option.

On the other hand, if you will be exploring cities in the summertime and hooking up your van to the local grid, a rooftop air conditioner that works fast and takes up no additional space might be best.

Bottom line: your campervan is your new home, and you will know which unit suits you best.
