Is It Better to Rent or Buy a Sprinter Van?

Mercedes-Benz Sprinters are extremely popular for their mid-range pricing, compact size, and customizability. They work just as well for businesses as they do for recreational vehicles. That being said, many wonder if spending $40,000 or more is worth it.

There are many places that offer Sprinter Van rentals for a nightly fee or short-term lease. Ultimately, whether you choose to rent or buy will depend on several factors.

When Should You Buy vs Rent a Sprinter Van?

There are a few scenarios when it makes more sense to buy your van outright. The main advantages of owning your vehicle are customizability and return on investment. If you are the owner, you can change whatever you like about your van to suit your needs.

You will also have made a purchase that holds onto its value exceptionally well. This means that, in the event you need to sell your vehicle, you can reclaim a good percentage of the original price.

You should consider purchasing your van instead of renting if you will be needing it long-term. This may apply if:

  • You own your own business and want to use your van for the foreseeable future to accomplish important tasks.
    • Owning your van means you can emblazon it with your company name and add whatever features and equipment you need to do your work. You will also not be subject to fees for going over a certain mileage.
  • You plan on living in your van for several months or more.
    • Nightly rentals for a converted Sprinter Van can amount to up to $300 per night. This can quickly add up to more than the cost of a new van.
    • Again, owning your own van allows you to make it truly yours. You can design it according to your personal tastes and take it anywhere you want without fear of damaging it or running up the mileage.

When Should You Rent A Sprinter Instead of Buying?

Renting or leasing a van or a fleet of vans can be appropriate in certain situations. You may only need a van for one project or for a weekend getaway, for example. Consider renting if the following situations apply to you:

  • You only need the van for a short time.
    • If you are planning a short vacation or road trip and won’t be using the van for anything else, it might make more sense to rent. The van will effectively be acting as a hotel on wheels, so a nightly rate will be more cost effective than a monthly payment toward ownership.
  • You have a business that requires a fleet of vans (6 or more vans).
    • Leasing your fleet allows for easy budgeting with a fixed monthly rate. Furthermore, the cost of the vans can be deducted from the company assets, which frees up capital.
    • Businesses that qualify as “commercial fleet buyers” (those with ten or more vans) are entitled to certain incentives, like discounts.

There are things to consider, however. Don’t forget about insurance rates and state tax. You may also be subject to mileage limitations. If these costs add up to more than buying a van outright, you might consider securing a loan and purchasing your vans outright.
