Getting to Know the All-New 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS

Mercedes-Benz is leading the charge (pun-intended) in luxury electric vehicles. The company projects that more than half of its cars will be fully electric vehicles or plug-in hybrids by 2030. The flagship of this new electric fleet is the all-new, all-electric 2022 Mercedes-Benz EQS.

The Future of Cars is Electric

With the Mercedes EQ line, the company has proven its commitment to investing in electric. The EQS is an impressive headliner for the company’s ambitious 50%-electric-by-2030 goal. By combining executive-class luxury and state-of-the-art technology with a progressive mobility initiative, the EQS sedan is well prepared to compete with other top-contending electric vehicles, including Tesla’s Model S.

What’s New About the 2022 Mercedes EQS?

In a word? Everything. The Mercedes-Benz Mercedes EQS is a brand new 5-door hatchback sedan replete with luxury features. The US market will offer two models: the EQS 450+ rear-wheel drive and the EQS 580 4MATIC all-wheel drive.

Outside Features of the 2022 EQS

Available in 10 different paint colors, the exterior of the Mercedes-EQ EQS is everything consumers have come to expect from the luxury S-Class and more. While reminiscent of the 2021 S-Class, the EQS line has a completely unique design built on a dedicated EV (electric vehicle) platform. f

The EQS boasts a sleek, futuristic design with the most aerodynamic profile available, thanks in large part to the smooth bottom and fold in door handles. An LED light band stretches across the vehicle’s entire front grille, just so you don’t forget that this is a Future Car.

The EQS glides on 20-inch, 5-spoke aero summer wheels with black trim, range-optimized of course. Efficiency without sacrificing luxury seems to be the name of this game.

Inside Features of the Mercedes EQS

The interior is all automated luxury: leather-bound comfort and intuitive tech abound. The focal point of the EQS 580 model interior is the expansive 56” Mercedes-Benz User Experience (MBUX) Hyperscreen.

Exclusive to the EQS line, the Hyperscreen is essentially three screens merged into one. It stretches from door to door, allowing for personalized, intuitive interaction by the driver and passengers alike.

Like most of the EQS features, the screen is built for efficiency, keeping commonly-used apps (navigation, phone, music) at the ready, with no awkward voice commands or scrolling necessary. The 450+ model is also equipped with MBUX, but utilizes a 12.8” Central OLED Touchscreen Portrait Display rather than the Hyperscreen.

While the exterior is slightly smaller than the S-Class, the interior of the EQS is so ergonomic and streamlined that it feels every bit as spacious.

The Mercedes-Benz EQS comes in three available trims: standard Premium, Exclusive, and Pinnacle. Depending on the selected trim, the driver can expect a full spa-menu of amenities, including heated leather seats with massage features, aromatherapy options, ambient lighting with 60+ different color choices, and ionic air purifiers. (They’re still working on the hot towels.)

Of course, consumers can also expect the usual features found in Mercedes-Benz luxury vehicles. Depending on the trim you choose, the following are available:

  • Keyless start
  • Rear-axle steering
  • Burmester surround-sound audio
  • Tilt-and-slide panoramic roof
  • 2-zone automatic climate control
  • Ambient interior lighting
  • Parking Package
  • Surround view monitor
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • Acoustic comfort package

How Does the EQS Drive?

Powering all this tech is a liquid-cooled 107.8 kilowatt lithium ion battery, installed under the vehicle floor. Built in-house in Germany, this next-level battery is designed to increase performance and optimize charging capacity, all in a more compact format.

Mercedes-Benz recommends installing a Level 2 Charger in your garage for faster charging at home, and offers plenty of assistance in this regard. Using the Level 2 instead of a regular outlet gets the EQS fully charged in about 11 hours, with a single charge being more than enough for day-to-day driving.

The Mercedes-EQ EQS 450+ is equipped with a rear-mounted synchronous electric motor operating at 329 horsepower and 419 lb-ft of torque, reaching speeds of 130 mph and going from 0-60 mph in 5.9 seconds. Its all-wheel-drive counterpart, the 580 4MATIC, likewise has a top speed of 130 mph. The additional front motor gives it a combined 516 hp and 631 lb-ft of torque, going from 0-60 mph in 4.1 seconds.

That is a considerable amount of torque for any vehicle, let alone an all-electric model. The resulting drive is so smooth and effortless, we doubt you’ll miss your engine revving.

How Does the EQS Compare To Gas-Powered Cars?

The EQS line is every bit as safe as its gas-powered counterparts and designed to last just as long. Like most electric vehicles, the EQS is quiet as a panther, incredibly smooth, and out-performs gas-powered cars in torque and acceleration.

The MBUX Hyperscreen is equipped with “Electric Intelligence,” allowing it to automatically switch off apps running unused in the background to further the range of the vehicle. It also enables the navigation system to not only chart your course, but get you the optimum driving range by accounting for charging stations, weather, and even terrain.

How Long Does the EQS 2022 Battery Last?

It is a common myth that electric cars are only useful for short drives. With the EQ line, Mercedes-Benz is working overtime to disprove the misconception. The one-two punch of the ultra-efficient battery and motor(s) means that one charge gives the EQS up to a 350 mile range–more than the average gas-powered vehicle will get you on a single tank.

If charging up on the road sounds intimidating, Mercedes is working on that as well. The company wants to make it as easy and stress-free as possible, with home units available (see above) and some 60,000 charging stations available currently.

The sophisticated navigation system also makes it easy to locate a charging station, and Mercedes has created a unique app that enables you to prepay from your phone.

Not convinced yet? To further support their progressive mobility initiative and get consumers into electric cars, Mercedes-Benz is partnering with Electrify America to pay for two years of 30-minute charging sessions. That’s TWO YEARS of free charges!

When Will the EQS 2022 Be Available?

The Mercedes-EQ EQS made its American debut in the fall of 2021 and is available for test-drives at dealerships throughout the U.S. Pricing begins at $102,310 for the Standard Premium 450+ model.
