1) X Games Aspen

Next to the winter Olympics, the X-Games are the end-all-be-all of winter sporting events. Athletes come from all over the world to test their mettle on the slopes of Aspen Snowmass. The event is broadcast worldwide via ESPN and ABC, so even if you can’t make it, you can tune in. In addition to all-day completion, enjoy a large selection of live music, not to mention all the appeal of the Aspen Snowmass Resort. Just a short drive from Denver, this is one of the best winter sporting events in Colorado to witness firsthand.

2) The Grand Traverse

Are you not content to sit back and watch others compete? Want to push yourself to the absolute limits? Anyone feeling brave and fit enough should enter this absolute madhouse of a cross-country ski race. Traversing 40 miles of extreme terrain in the Elk Mountains, racers ascend 6,800 vertical feet from Crested Butte to Aspen. Additionally, the race starts at midnight for additional avalanche security, so be sure to bring your headlamp! Of course, spectating the start and finish of this race is an absolute blast as well, so don’t worry if you’re not feeling up to those 40 miles (most of us aren’t!).

Okay, so this isn’t technically a sporting event, but there’s certainly lots of friendly competition and winter festivities to enjoy. Compete in a free-for-all downhill sled race, or submerge yourself in icy water for the Penguin Plunge. Additionally, you can choose to relax and watch the liftoff of dozens of hot air balloons, a perfect balance to the hectic frenzy of most winter sporting events in Colorado.
