angled view of Mercedes Benz electric g-wagon

Mercedes Benz is set to release its highly anticipated electric G-Wagon in 2024. The EQG SUV will have the full off-roading capabilities of its gas-powered predecessors, but with zero carbon emissions and a sleek, electrified design.

Fans of Mercedes’ G-class have been waiting with baited breath since the brand first announced plans for an all-electric off-roading vehicle in 2020. The Concept EQG was unveiled in Munich in 2021, after which Mercedes signed off on mass production. The model is set to hit American shores by late 2024.

What Will the 2024 EQG Look Like?

The exterior design of the Mercedes electric G wagon will maintain the look and feel of the original, but with some seriously edgy upgrades. Expect to see the familiar boxy silhouette, but with a few bells and whistles exclusive to Mercedes EV lineup. The chrome grill, for example, will be replaced by the Black Panel front end design, now a signature feature of all Mercedes electric cars.

In place of the spare tire cover, you’ll find a lockable storage box designed to look like a wall charger, complete with a ring of white LED lights. More LED lighting along the entire edge of the car and a two tone color scheme (gloss black on top, gloss aluminum on the bottom) help launch the electric G-Wagon into a new era.

Interior of 2024 Electric G Wagon

At the moment, we have only the concept EQG to guess what the interior of the 2024 electric g wagon might look like. The concept vehicle’s upholstery and trim is snow-white with flat chrome air vents. While the overall look and feel is decidedly pleasant, we can’t imagine most fans of the G-wagon will go for a white interior when it comes to an off-roading vehicle. We are fairly certain the 2024 mass-market model will have a variety of interior colors and materials to choose from.

Other than this frosty color scheme, the interior of the electric G Wagon looks fairly similar to the gas fueled models. There is the signature digital instrument cluster and large central display, and plenty of conveniences like cup holders and charging ports.

2024 EQG Off-Roading Capabilities

Great care has been taken to maintain the electric G-Wagon’s off-roading abilities. Mercedes Benz Group has stated the vehicle should have a climbing capacity of up to 100 percent. The vehicle will maintain the traditional, individual suspension on the front axle and a rigid rear axle. The concept car also equips four separate electric motors near each wheel, each with its own controls.

The combination of separate front and rear suspension and the individually powered wheels means the vehicle can accomplish significant off-roading feats. This includes the famous tank turn, also known affectionately as a “G-turn” by fans. The G-turn involves a complete, 360 degree turn on the car’s own axis. A remarkable feat, especially for an EV.

Electric G Wagon Range and Battery

The design of the electric G-wagon battery is still underway. Mercedes Benz announced earlier this year that it would be collaborating with Sila Nanotechnologies to incorporate their silicon anode chemistry into the new electrical configuration of the EQG. This technology reportedly allows for an increase in energy density (up to 40 percent more) without sacrificing safety or performance.
