electric Sprinter van being charged

Mercedes Benz has announced plans to begin production on an electric Sprinter van in the second half of 2023. Officially dubbed the Mercedes-Benz eSprinter, the vans in keeping with the brand’s pledge to electrify all vehicles by 2030. Read our article to find out more about the new electric Sprinter van, including anticipated range, cost, and more.

Electric Sprinter Van Anticipated Specs

The North American model of the Mercedes eSprinter will be equipped with a 113 kWh battery, which is the company’s largest. Drivers will have a choice between a Standard Output Model (100 kilowatts) and a High Output Model (150 kilowatts). An impressive torque of 295 lb-foot makes for superior handling in these large vehicles, which have a 170” wheelbase and a cargo volume of up to 488 cubic feet.

Estimated range from a full charge for an electric Sprinter van is 400 kilometers, or about 248 miles. Like other Mercedes electric vehicles, the eSprinter vans can be charged at home using an AC level 2 wall charger (0 to 100 percent in around 12 hours), or at a DC fast charging station in about 42 minutes (from 10 percent to 80 percent).

Who is the Mercedes Electric Sprinter For?

Sprinters have gained a following in the last few years as a highly customizable option for van DIY conversions and #vanlife. While the electric Sprinters may still be desirable to some as a traveling vehicle, the necessity to charge the vehicle means drivers will be more limited as to where they can take their van. They will not only need to remain in areas where DC charging stations are readily available, but also have access to an AC charging unit where they have permission to remain overnight.

These constraints mean the electric Sprinters will lend themselves more efficiently as commercial vehicles. We can probably expect to see fleets of them operating under familiar company names, or as the next line of zero emissions working vans for contractors, florists, mobile groomers, and other professions that need a solid cargo van and have a home base where the vehicle can be slow-charged.

Electric Sprinter Features

The remainder of the eSprinter will be similar to diesel and gas-powered models, with plenty of options for tech and luxury. Drivers will have access to the latest generation of MBUX software as well as Mercedes’ patented safety systems, including Driver Assist, Active Brake Assist, and a rear view camera. Wireless charging, climate control, and heatable steering wheel options are some of the reasons why the Sprinter has earned a reputation as a driver-centric van.

How Much Will the eSprinter Cost?

A MSRP has not yet been determined for the electric Sprinter van. The 2023 gas powered model has a starting price of $43,500. With that in mind and the fact that Mercedes electric vehicles tend to have a higher price tag compared to their non-electric counterparts, we estimate that the 2024 Mercedes Electric Sprinter Van will start at around $55,000.
