Mercedes AMG vehicle in black

You have probably heard the designation “AMG” at some point when shopping for or discussing Mercedes Benz cars. But what, exactly, does AMG mean? And what is the difference between AMG trim and a full AMG-model car?

AMG stands for “Aufrecht Melcher Großaspach.” The company was founded in 1967 by Mercedes-Benz engineers Hans-Werner Aufrecht and Erhard Melcher. Großaspach (pronounced Gross-ahz-pack) is the name of Aufrecht’s hometown in Germany.

Melcher and Aufrecht were race car enthusiasts and developed AMG as a manufacturer of high powered racing engines. The business later expanded to develop a range of unofficial upgrades geared toward Mercedes Benz vehicles.

The first AMG vehicles, then, were various models of Mercedes that had been souped up with Melcher and Aufrecht’s high performance engines and styling packages. No official AMG model existed until 1993, when a cooperation agreement was reached between Daimler Benz (owner of Mercedes Benz) and AMG. The agreement allowed for the first commonly developed car between the companies and the first “official” AMG line: the Mercedes-Benz AMG C36.

Difference Between AMG Trim and AMG Model Car

Full AMG model vehicles are fitted with a hand-crafted, high-performance engine that is manufactured in only one place in the world: Affalterbach, Germany. Each engine is adorned with a metal plaque bearing the AMG logo and the maker’s signature.

Vehicles equipped with these engines have more than double the horsepower of a standard sedan, as well as enhanced handling via seemingly endless torque. The 2021 AMG GT Black series, for example, maxes out at 720 hp and boats 590 lb-ft of torque.

Having said that, an AMG engine is not necessarily for the average driver. Not everyone needs to reach top speeds of 190 mph, after all. But that doesn’t mean you can enjoy the look of a high end sports car.

Mercedes-Benz allows you to upgrade nearly any model with an AMG trim or styling package. This means you can customize your vehicle to look exactly like an AMG car, minus the all-important AMG engine. AMG trim options include:

  • A rear spoiler to give the car a sportier look and reduce drag
  • Body styling with a polished chrome cross-strut, deep front air dam
  • 18” or 19” AMG style wheels
  • Contoured sport front seats and sport steering wheel
  • AMG Floor Mats
  • Sport Suspension for enhanced handling and precision
  • Sport brakes

You can also opt for the AMG Night package, which incorporates jet black versions of the AMG styling elements.
