Red Mercedes Benz SL Roadster

Last year, Mercedes relaunched its iconic SL as the sleekest new member of the AMG family. The Mercedes Benz SL has a history of being one of the most in-demand luxury sports cars, known for its sleek styling and exceptional power. The original 300 SL was built to serve as a race car that could tackle any terrain, from sealed tracks to gravel roads. The SL stands for “super light,” a designation unique to this model and indicative of the car’s jaunty styling and seemingly weightless design.

AMG GT vs AMG SL Roadster

The 2022 AMG SL Roadster and AMG GT vehicles are built using the same engine and drivetrain: twin biturbo V8 engines put out 460 horsepower and 516 lb-ft of torque in the 55 trim, and a whopping 577 horsepower and 590 lb-ft of torque in the 63 trim. The main difference between the two vehicles is their drivability. The SL is designed to be more of a touring car: the cabin is positively resplendent with luxury and technology. The GT, on the other hand, stays truer to its racing roots and offers less in the way of interior amenities.

The AMG SL also features the original car’s signature soft top, which will no longer be available in post-2021 AMG GT vehicles.

2022 Mercedes SL Is Completely Unique

The all-new SL was designed from scratch. The architecture was completely re-developed by Mercedes AMG, perfecting all aspects and materials to achieve maximum comfort and drivability. The frame is light aluminum, while the chassis utilizes an intelligent material composed of high aluminum and fiber composites. The new vehicle shares no components with the old version, making it a brand new concept while still paying homage to the original vehicles’ lightweight structure and bold optics.

Inside, the new Mercedes SL has room for up to four people (previous versions were two-seaters only). Drivers who do not need the additional seating can simply fold the seats down for additional cargo space.

Technology has been seamlessly integrated inside the vehicle to accomplish what AMG designers call “hyperanalog.” That is, a proper flow of analog geometry and digital screens, resulting in a superbly organic digital cockpit.

2022 Mercedes Benz AMG SL Features

As we mentioned, the Mercedes SL will incorporate the same drivetrain as the AMG GT. Run by a handcrafted AMG 4.0 L biturbo engine, the SL 55 can reach 60 mph in a mere 3.8 seconds (the 63 gets there in 3.5). The car also boasts other prominent AMG technology, including:

  • AMG Speedshift MCT 9-Speed Transmission
  • AMG ACTIVE RIDE CONTROL suspension with adaptive damping adjustment
  • AMG Performance 4MATIC+ all-wheel drive
  • AMG DYNAMIC SELECT

The SL also comes equipped with Mercedes’ myriad safety programs, including brake assist and blindspot assist.
