gas pump silhouetted at sunset to symbolize fuel economy

With gas prices still averaging over $4/gallon in Colorado, fuel economy is an increasingly important topic. We favor gas guzzling SUVs and trucks in many parts of the state, hoping to easily navigate mountain roads and the winter’s snow and ice. Is there a way we can get better fuel economy without sacrificing all wheel performance and safety in the snow? Read our article to find out more.

4 Easy Steps to Improve Fuel Economy

Fill Tires With Proper Air Pressure

Your tires should be filled with no more and no less than the manufacturer’s recommended PSI. Underinflated tires, in particular, have a negative impact on fuel economy, since they increase the surface area coming in contact with the road. This, in turn, increases the coefficient of friction needed to move the vehicle, meaning more energy is expended. (There are more factors at work here as well, including flexing of the tire walls, leading to premature wear and tear).

According to fueleconomy.gov, you can improve gas mileage by up to 3% simply by maintaining proper tire pressure. The PSI recommended for your tires can usually be found in your owner’s manual or on a sticker in the driver’s side door jam.

Use the Right Motor Oil

Just like with tire pressure, using the manufacturer recommended grade of oil can improve your vehicle’s fuel economy significantly (up to 2 percent in some cases). You can also check for “Energy Conserving” versions of your fuel grade, which contain special additives to reduce friction.

Use Eco Mode

If you have a newer model Mercedes, be sure to take advantage of your vehicle’s Eco Mode and mild hybrid driving systems. When you select Eco Mode, your Mercedes will look for opportunities to recoup energy through actions such as braking and when idle. Eco mode also reduces the work done by the engine by slowing down reactivity in the throttle. You may also notice the air conditioner output is slightly less, and the lights may be dimmer.

Eco mode is ideal when driving at speeds of 45 mph or less, since it affects overall acceleration time.

Address Engine Issues Promptly

Of course, it goes without saying that an efficient engine is integral in improving fuel economy. Be sure to perform routine maintenance on your engine, including your regularly scheduled Mercedes Service A and Service B. If the check engine light is on, bring your car to a licensed dealer promptly to prevent engine deterioration and poor performance, including lower MPG.

Does Premium Gas Improve MPG?

Contrary to popular belief, using premium gas in a vehicle that does not require it will not improve fuel economy. On the other hand, if you use regular gas in a vehicle that recommends premium, you risk early engine degradation and, therefore, poorer performance and slightly reduced MPG. In other words, use the fuel recommended for your specific vehicle.
