DIY Windshield Repair

In some cases, you can repair a crack in your windshield yourself. Before you attempt any DIY windshield repairs, however, you will need to consider a few things.

Pros of Repairing Windshield Chips at Home

The main benefit of DIY windshield repairs is cost. Repair kits are inexpensive and can be great at repairing certain types of chips. However, they have limitations. You will need to evaluate the size and placement of the chip to determine if a repair kit will suffice.

Size of Windshield Chip

At home windshield kits are generally best suited for small chips that go no deeper than the first layer of glass. If the gouge is bigger than one inch in diameter and goes beyond the first layer of glass, a kit is not a good option. In addition, DIY windshield kits are not recommended for cracks longer than 12 inches.

Placement of Windshield Damage

If the crack or chip is located near or under the windshield wipers, chip repair in general (at home or at a shop) is not recommended. The constant pressure exerted on the glass in these areas means that any chip repairs will be quickly undone and potentially worsen over time. In these cases, you will most likely need to take your car in to have the windshield replaced.

Cons of DIY Windshield Repair

Warranty Voided by Self Repairs

Your vehicle’s warranty may be voided if you attempt repairs yourself. Any further issues to the car will not be covered if your warranty specifies that such repairs must be completed by a certified professional.

Chips Made Worse By DIY Repairs

Unless you are experienced, you run the risk of actually making things worse on your windshield. There is more to repairing a chip than simply filling it in with resin and letting it dry. Unless it is done properly, you might notice blurry or opaque areas near the chip. This cannot be undone and you will likely need to replace the whole windshield.

Cost of Windshield Repair Might Not Be an Issue

If cost is your primary concern for repairing your windshield at home, call your auto insurance. If you have comprehensive coverage, you probably have a glass policy that waives your deductible for chip and crack repairs. If the damage is more extensive, your insurance will likely cover the cost of a full replacement after your deductible is met.
