Mercedes plug in hybrid S-class model S 580e

The all new 2023 Mercedes-Benz S 580e 4MATIC will be available in the US in the next few months. The brand previously launched a rear wheel drive only version in 2021, but this never made it to American shores. The all-wheel drive S 580e will be the third model currently available stateside in the S-Class, the other two being the S 500 4MATIC and the S580 4MATIC. It will be the only Mercedes plug in hybrid S class vehicle, utilizing a permanently excited synchronous electric motor in addition to a standard combustion engine motor.

How Much Will the Mercedes S 580e Cost?

Mercedes recently announced an expected MSRP for the S 580e, which should be delivered to US dealerships by late spring or early summer. Starting price for the plug-in hybrid S Class vehicle starts at  $123,700. This is in line with the S 580 4MATIC, which also starts at around $124,000.

With a price like that, you can expect a significant amount of ritz and technology in your S 580e. At the center of the cabin is a massive, 12.5” touchscreen where you will find most of the controls and the latest version of Mercedes AI learning software, the MBUX. But for a vehicle often used as a limousine, voice controls are essential. Luckily, rear passengers need only say “Hey, Mercedes” followed by a command, and the vehicle will accommodate various requests, such as climate, navigation, and music preferences.

As for the rest of the vehicle, you can expect the utmost in luxury to come standard. Heated, ergonomic seats, ambient lighting, fragrance systems, air purification, and the Burmester sound system will feature among other first class amenities.

Mercedes S 580e vs S 560e

The 2023 Mercedes Benz S 580e comes on the tails of another electrified S-class model, the short-lived S 560e. The newer S 580 is a massive upgrade compared to its predecessor, with twice the battery power, increased hp (510 up from 470), double the range (62 miles), and an official fuel economy estimate of 177 to 217 mpg when using only the electric engine (this is increased from the S 560 e’s 108 to 113 MPGe).

The Mercedes S580 e also has the lowest CO2 emissions of any luxury plug in hybrid. It also beats out leading competitors Audi A8 and the BMW 7 series in both range (around 32 miles for both), hp, and fuel economy.

Is There An All Electric S-Class by Mercedes?

Yes. The Mercedes Benz EQS Class has all electric sedans and SUVs with comparable technology and luxury components to its gas-fueled S-class counterparts.

Even the non-electric gas models in the S Class (S 500 and S580) feature an element of hybrid drive. The cars utilize an Integrated Starter Generator to recoup energy through functions like braking when the car is in Eco Mode.
