How to Prepare Your Home for Charging an Electric Vehicle

Electric vehicles are becoming increasingly popular, thanks to their ever-increasing efficiency, range, technology, and, of course, reduced carbon footprint. Tens of thousands of public charging stations have added to these vehicles’ reliability, even on long distance trips. Despite the prevalence of charging stations, however, most drivers still report a preference for home charging. In fact, new construction homes often boast an “EV-ready” garage as a major selling point. But what if your garage does not have an EV charger? How can you prepare your home for charging your electric vehicle?

Level 1 vs Level 2 EV Charging at Home

Level 1 charging does not require any upgrades to your current electrical system. You simply plug one end of the charging cable into the vehicle’s charge port and the other into a regular, 120 volt outlet. This is the type of charging system that comes standard with all electric vehicles.

Level 1 charging will work, but it will take a significant amount of time. In fact, it takes about 50 hours to fully charge an EV using a 120 volt outlet. Needless to say, if you are using your EV as your primary mode of transportation, you will likely need something much faster. The main advantage of level 1 chargers is that your garage probably already has a standard 120 volt outlet. Even if it doesn’t, the cost to install one is fairly minimal (around $150).

Level 2 chargers can fully charge an electric vehicle overnight (10-12 hours). However, they require a dedicated circuit via a 240 volt or 208 volt outlet. They may also need an adapter or wall box.

Mercedes Benz Level 2 Charger Installation

Mercedes Benz recommends using a level 2 charger for at home EV charging. The preferred unit is called the ChargePoint Home Flex, and it is a wall box that can be professionally installed using Qmerit, Mercedes’ network of trusted electricians.

To get a free estimate, you will need to answer a few simple questions about your location, vehicle, and property. You may also be asked to submit a few photos for further clarification. Afterwards, an estimate will be provided and you can decide if you wish to proceed with the professional installation.

Again, the final cost will depend on your location and specific needs. However, you can expect to pay around $1500-$1800 for the installation and new ChargePoint charger itself.

Can I Install a Level 2 Charger Myself?

Unless you are fairly experienced with electrical projects, it is not recommended that you install a level 2 charger yourself. The process involves several intricate re-wiring steps, and may even involve replacing the entire breaker box to accommodate the new charging system. You will also likely need a permit, which will need to be obtained through your local permit office.

Overall, it will be worth it to hire a professional to install your new level 2 EV charger.

Other Considerations for EV Charging at Home

You will want to ensure that your new EV home charging is done in a safe environment and is as convenient as possible. When installing your level 2 charger, keep the following in mind:

Where to place a charger for at home EV charging?

  • Try to install the charger on the same side as your vehicle’s charge port and within 20 feet (most charging cables are between 18-20 feet, so the closer, the better). If you have two EVs in the same garage, install the charger in between the two for equal access.
  • Install the charger at least 1.5 feet above the garage floor, but ideally 3 feet high.
  • Install the actual charger no more than 4 feet away from the 240 volt outlet
  • Make sure the cable is off the ground and away from any sources of water, including snow and ice melt.

WIFI for EV Charging at Home

  • Make sure your charger can access the home WIFI network so you can monitor charging levels.
